Johnny Young and the Strangers reunite for TVW 50th Reunion

Guests will be entertained by a fellow television veteran Johnny Young and The Strangers Club 7 Teen band.  Johnny was one of TVW7’s first teenage stars. He now fronts the group and hosts the Radio 6IX Big breakfast show.

John's first television break was hosting the TVW pop music show Club 7 Teen in early 1965, till mid 1967, when he moved to Melbourne. The below music clip comes from that popular show, and features Johnny Young and The Strangers.

The Stargate Actors Academy and Perth opera singers, Justin and Katherine Friend, will also perform at the TVW Reunion on Sunday October 18th, 2009.

In 1966, John was holding the top Australian charts position for five weeks from October 22nd to November 19th with the double A-side 'Step Back / Cara Lyn'. 'Step Back' was an Easybeats song, co-written by Stevie Wright and George Young, whilst 'Cara Lyn' was a cover of The Strangeloves. He then knocked himself off the #1 spot in Sydney with his 'Let It Be Me' EP, which remained at the top, and #4 in Melbourne, till Dec 10th when eventually overtaken by the Easybeats 'Friday On My Mind'.

John's third EP was a version of the Beatles classic 'All My Lovin', which reached the Top 10 in Sydney during April 1967, and was to become his signature tune.

In 1967, John recorded the Bee Gees number 'Craise Finton Kirk', which was backed by the Bee Gees and produced by Barry Gibb. "Craise Finton Kirk" / "I am the World" was released as a single in August 1967. It made the Australian national Top 30 (#14 in Melbourne and #29 in Sydney) during September and also gained considerable airplay on British radio, notably on the legendary pirate station Radio London.

This clip from the German program Beat Club shows Dave Lee Travis introducing Johnny Young with 'Craise Finton Kirk'.  John was followed immediately by the Bee Gees themselves at number one with Massachusetts!

Whilst in Melbourne, John took over the prestigious role of comparing The Go!! Show.

John spent three frantic years as one of Australia’s top pop performers before branching out as a radio DJ, TV presenter, songwriter and record and TV producer.

In 1969, John began carving a successful songwriting career. As well as a number of hits for Australian recording artists, he penned 'Here Comes the Star' for Herman's Hermits. During the 1970's and 1980's, John found further fame as the compere of the popular TV talent show called 'Young Talent Time', which launched the careers of many youthful stars, including Tina Arena and Danni Minogue.

John now hosts the Radio 6IX Big breakfast show, week days from 5:30am to 9:00am.
